Heartfelt Buttonholes

‘Gentlemen wear buttonholes on their left lapel, over their heart, and not high enough to tickle their nose. Ladies wear them on the right ‘coz we’re always right.’

Emily at Lotus Photography

But seriously , why do men wear their buttonholes on the left side and women on the right?

This practise dates back to medieval times when knights would wear their lady’s colours in the form of a flower or token on the left side to be close to their heart . Women would then wear their buttonholes on the right side to provide visual symmetry when standing next to men . When a couple is photographed or stands together , the flowers on opposite sides create a balanced and harmonious look .

While these are traditional practises , it’s important to note that modern weddings and events are increasingly flexible and people often choose what is best for them . Whether you stick to tradition or opt for a different approach , consider incorporating sustainable buttonholes into your wedding !🌿💚

Using sustainable flowers and material can make a big difference . Choose locally -sourced blooms or even consider dried flowers that have a longer shelf life and reduce waste. Your special day can be both beautiful and eco – friendly ! 🌸✨
